Property deeds first show the house being conveyanced to Thomas Rowland (tailor) in May 1831, purchased from James Love of Rush Hill. At the time, the property was addressed as 22 Twerton Hayes Buildings.
From the late 1850s to mid 1860s, the property was occupied by a succession of Methodist ministers -Joseph Best, Rev John Bellingham and Rev John Bennetts. By the early 1900s, when the street was renamed as Brougham Hayes, the occupiers were Daniel Cox (iron turner) and Mrs E Smith (dressmaker). They were followed by William Allen (egg merchant) in 1927.
