Up to the late 1800s, the Englishcombe Lane area was entirely farmland (Sladebrook and Stirtingale Farms) barring The Moorlands. Building around the turn of the century added market gardeners cottages to the west end of the road and more substantial homes around Sladebrook Farm. The next stage of development added Edwardian villas from the Bloomfield end of the road. Between the wars, the middle section of the road took shape whilst The Oval was created off the north side of the road. This property was first occupied around 1935.
