The municipally funded housing of the Dolemeads scheme was approved in early 1900 and consisted of four phases of construction - forty two houses in Excelsior St and the west side of Archway St were the first to be built, with the first property being opened by Dowager Lady Tweedmouth in June 1901. Archway St was finished just before WW1, with 18 further houses added. The remainder of the two phases of the seven acre site took until 1940, with the northern extremity of Ferry Lane the last to be constructed.
