We believe this property was constructed in the early 1930s and first occupied around 1935. This property was, without access to deeds, a tricky one to date as Southdown Rd was re-numbered in 1957 due to infill development in the area.
At the time, Southdown Rd comprised of a scattering of houses at the lower Oldfield Park end leading to a group of larger homes concentrated around Southdown Stores and Southdown Lodge. In addition to the local Post Office, there was also a grocer (Camp Garden Stores - now this property) and a fish restaurant (Melrose - run by J Havill). At the Englishcombe Lane end of the road, much of the ground was used as a nursery (of the garden variety) run by Matthew Coombe.
