Late 19th century Bath maps show sites and terraces opposite this location named as Cooks Buildings, Crowdens Buildings and Vernon House. Ferry Lane (ending in one of two ferries to the Newbridge bank) was 100yds to the northwest of this property. Vernon Terrace was constructed during the 1880s in several stages with the western end first. Charles Wilkins operated on the Cooks Buildings site opposite as part of his woollen cloth business in the early 19th century and it later became a carpet factory. In 1891, W & R Cook Ltd began manufacturing ready made clothing at the mill. Cook's ceased working in the 1960s and the buildings were pulled down in 1965.
